Plastic NOT fantastic!!

I watched Natural World about Hawaii on the weekend, and I have decided to do one small thing for the environment and give up plastic bags altogether.

Hawaii has the dubious honour of having the dirtiest beach in the world. Its literally knee deep in cheap plastic throw away items that have washed up there from countries around the pacific rim . It got me thinking how little thought we put into buying someting cheap and plastic, when really these are the items we should be thinking about the most as they are going to still be hanging about on the planet in 300 years!

Anyway, I'm not a proper eco warrior, I've got a car, I like flying to far away places and I'm not about to start brushing my teeth with twigs, but who really needs plastic bags. Its one small thing, but I have already turned down about 15 bags and I've only been doing this 3 days.

Its really heartbreaking to think that turtles and dolphins are being suffocated by plastic bags floating around in the sea...the producer of the film has managed to persuade her whole village to ban plastic bags.

My local food market has followed suit, and from June won't be giving out any plastic bags, just paper. I wish more places at least gave you the option of having paper, like in the US - in fact I'm on a mission to complain about it everywhere I go. Besides it always feels kind of cool getting your groceries in a big brown paper bag!
